History - 2000

Raving Daves 2.0

Phase Two begins: In 2000, the dot-com startups bombed, the NASDAQ tanked, and PeopleSoft came roaring back as an ass-kicking industry leader big-time once again -- this time with PeopleSoft 8: a pure internet eBusiness platform that replaces and blows away the client/server architecture with which we'd led Phase One in the 1990s.

With new bassist Kirk Chan, new drummer Patrick McGavock, and the departure of a number of Raving Daves old-timers, it felt like a whole new band in the early months of 2000. Just as well: the new Daves reflected the new edgy spirit of the Craig Conway era -- aggressive, competitive, intense, young, take-no-prisoners, conquer-the-world. The band systematically weeded out many of the stale, feeble old tunes they'd been doing for years and came up with a 90% new repertoire, injecting it with more contemporary and alternative stuff. In recognition of the change in the industry and the change in our sound and attitude, we started to call ourselves "Raving Daves 2.0."

But the old rebelliousness and iconoclasm weren't gone: for example, at the January 2000 Oakland Paramount gig, in jest, poking fun at Craig's slightly, er, stuffed-shirt style, the entire band appeared onstage in conservative business suits (Craig is reported to have laughed and said, "I love it!"). In October, at the PeopleSoft Americas Conference Celebration at Universal Studios L.A., the Raving Daves capped a triumphant year 2000 by opening for Jakob Dylan's Wallflowers and jamming with Los Lobos.
